What’s inside of you?
The sculptor looks at a block of marble and says "There’s a marathon runner inside that block of marble and I’m going to chip and chisel all that excess marble away and let him out."
When a new patient comes into my office with his hair turning grey, gasping for air after climbing a flight of the stairs, over weight, out of shape with a beer belly, unable to walk without waddling and favoring his hip or knee...and he tells me his lower back has been aching him and radiating down the back of his thigh for the past four weeks. He feels that as he has gotten older his joints have started to turn to cement.
What I see standing there is a youthful, lean, trim marathon runner.
With the sculptor, he merely needs to chisel his athlete out of the block of marble, and a marble marathon runner just appears there one day.
In my office I don’t use a hammer and chisel to free my athlete from his "restraints".
Often, in less time however, than it takes the sculptor to free his marathon runner from a block of marble, by merely adjusting his spine, changing some lifestyle postural / activities of daily living, putting him to work in the gym, altering and modifying his diet and nutrition... It is possible to transform my out-of-shape-falling-apart-baby-boomer into a solid athlete - someone who is capable of running that 26.2 miles marathon.
Sometimes the sculptor starts out with a flawed block of marble and things don’t work out so well. Maybe the marble cracks and too big of piece falls off....start over
Sometimes I start out with someone who maybe doesn’t believe it can happen. Maybe, he is short-sighted and merely wants the low back and leg pain to stop. When his back and leg pain stops ...he feels he has accomplished what he wanted. "See ya" -
I might, but he doesn’t see an athlete in there when he looks in the mirror.
It all depends upon what you see in there.
Don’t sell yourself short.
As in so many other areas of life - in every adverse situation there is an opportunity.
Tell your doctor who and what you see in there when you look in the mirror. Your doctor should be the facilitator who guides you in letting out the inner you.
